300

We are getting close to 300 visitors to our blog! Thanks for dropping by to check out all the fab stuff that happens in our classroom and school! We also love reading comments left by people.

Hopefully you have had a lovely relaxing long weekend (extra long this year!),  and come back charged and ready to learn as our school year rapidly winds up!

What did you do over the long weekend?

Static Electricity Experiment

Yesterday we put our science thinking hats back on to investigate static electricity and how it can be used to make things move. This was our experiment:

How to roll a can with static electricity

Equipment:

  • Empty drink can
  • Balloon
  • Head of hair

Method

  1. Blow up a balloon.
  2. Rub the balloon on your head.
  3. Gently hold the balloon near the can without touching it.

We had so much fun (even though we made our hair a little messy)!

You Can Do It!

In our Social-Emotional Learning Program (You Can Do It!), we have been learning about the values we need to be successful people.  Last week we talked about being caring towards others, and this week we talked about how successful people KEEP ON TRYING.  WE watched this Disney Pixar Shirt Film ‘Lifted’, and discussed how we need to keep on trying, even when the going gets tough and we don’t succeed straight away. Here’s the link to the short.  Maybe you could watch it at home together and have a talk about times when you had to keep trying and trying.

St John’s First Aid VIsit

On Monday 1/2HI had a visit from St John’s First Aid.  We all learned about what makes an EMERGENCY, and what to do if an emergency happens and there are no adults around to help us.

Maybe you could challenge your parents to this quiz www.stjohnvic.com.au/quiz and see if you can beat them.

Don’t forget to fill in your EMERGENCY INFORMATION card and place it in an easy to find place!

Magnet Mania!

imageThis week we have been exploring magnets as part of our Science Inquiry. We discovered magnets are pretty awesome! One of our tasks was to use a magnet to make a paperclip travel  through a maze. We also investigated the types of things magnets will attract and how strong they are. Perhaps you would like to do some more investigating at home.

What did you find out about magnets?

Getting Our Knowledge Ready

At the start of each new inquiry we spend time ‘Getting Our Knowledge Ready’. This helps us to share our current knowledge and new ideas about a topic. We used a CSIW graphic organiser to get our knowledge ready about science. The C stands for a Colour that we think of when we think Science,  the S stands for a Symbol, the I stands for an Image and the W stands for a Word. Below are some examples of the clever ideas that some of our students came up with!

Which colour would you associate with Science and why?
